How to Sew Ballet Elastics on Ballet Shoes

Simple steps on how to sew your childs ballet shoe elastic in place.

What will I need?
  • Ballet Shoes
  • Elastics - normally supplied with shoes
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Needle and Cotton
    • choose a colour to match the colour of the ballet shoes
  • Your Childs foot for fitting

Place the ballet shoes on your childs feet, and tighten up the thin drawstring at the top of the shoes by the toes, this will keep the shoe firmly around the foot. (remember to loosen it as the foot grows)

Take the piece of elastic supplied and place it at one side of the shoe by the ankle bone and make a mark with a pencil, lay the elastic piece across the foot to the other side and mark the position it needs to be attached at the other side, be sure to not make the elastic too tight so as not to cut off circulation in the foot or mark the foot whilst wearing.

To place the elastics in the right position hold the shoe in front of you with the toe pointing away from your body and the heel facing the body. Next take hold of the heel end of the shoe - the back of the shoe that lays against the back of your heel near your body, and fold it down to lay flat against the sole of the shoe. Place the elastic in the fold that forms by folding the heel down and stitch one piece of the elastic in the fold ensuring the elastic is placed at an angle facing outwards. Take the other end of that piece and place it in the fold on the opposite side then stitch it in place.

Note: Be sure not to stitch through the drawstring that is threaded through the shoe as you will be unable to loosen or tighten it if you sew it to the elastic.

Repeat for the other shoe. To make sure the shoe is secure let your child have a little skip round in the ballet shoes and if they stay in place then you have done a good job!

Well Done!.
